"Around here, the only (near) universal truth we’ll name is that growth requires getting uncomfortable, and you can’t do that from a place of danger or shame."
I think when you discussed safety I didn't realize that my lack of safety was from fears of dangers and underlying shame, there was this disconnect until recently I realized that a lot of my safety or "assumed" safety comes from people pleasing. If the people around me get the answers they want and I respond the way they expect or be the way they expect ... then I am stuck in the same place with white lies and hidden truths.
I found out this week about new laws because of the Supreme Court about eliminating discussions of "gender, sexuality, or "family structures" in the classroom without it being in the curriculum and standards, I told one my best teacher friends... it ended with me realizing I hide the truth of my sexual orientation and gender identity to be safe on my campus, and I did not realize how much that shame and danger weighs on me... when I am trying to get kids to feel safe in their selves, I am unsafe in mine
Kate-WHAT AN ABSOLUTE HONOR I’m so touched for your including my words in your work. Psychological Safety is so important and isn’t talked about enough. Thank you for giving it a voice and spreading the knowledge everyone needs. 💕💕
Thank you, Kate, as always for the kindness and thoroughness here. What an important topic. And thanks too for the community challenge - really helpful for me (with lots of privilege) to have something actionable to do for our fellow humans 💜
